Project

Climate action in the hospitality sector

We’re supporting Preferred Travel Group with the development of their Climate Action Plan, as well as providing training and advice that will help educate and inspire Preferred Travel Group member hotels and employees to become climate action ambassadors. Our aim is to support Preferred Travel Group as they take a more engaged approach to leadership on this issue and encourage climate action across the sector.

Preferred Travel Group signed the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism at the Future of Tourism Coalition’s Summit in Athens in September 2022, signalling their strong commitment to climate action and thereby pledging to produce a Climate Action Plan by September 2023.  We are supporting this planning process and helping to widen the impact of their work on this issue through facilitation, expertise, training and communication initiatives. The planning process will help to pave the way for the organisation to create the structures and systems needed to further scale impactful corporate sustainability initiatives internally across their three key pillars of Nature, Culture, and Community and externally, to help position them as a sustainability leader of the travel and tourism industry in the future, while also inspiring its member hotels and stakeholders to contribute to the positive transformation of travel.

Background
Preferred Travel Group is the parent company of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, Beyond Green, Historic Hotels of America, Historic Hotels Worldwide, PTG Consulting, and Beyond Green Travel, representing more than 1,100 hotels, resorts and residences across 80 countries, in addition to a global portfolio of destination marketing organizations and tourist boards.

Our role
Facilitation:
We will help to co-facilitate climate action education and discussion, and provide global and industry-specific context and best practices, leading to key organizational decisions.

We will serve as a ‘Critical Friend’ to help the steering committee ask the right questions, define parameters and larger goals for the plan, suggest assignments and review documentation/support as needed along the way.

Training:
We will lead three climate change training sessions to educate and unite the Preferred Travel Group’s management team.

Expertise:
We will support the development of Preferred Travel Group’s Climate Action Plan, including identifying specific opportunities to scale impact by influencing and inspiring its wider network of member hotels and other industry stakeholders.

Communication:
We will advise on opportunities to collaborate with other stakeholders and initiatives to scale impact and will enhance internal communications efforts to engage staff.

To kick off the partnership, Travel Foundation CEO, Jeremy Sampson spoke at the Preferred Travel Group Global Conference in May 2023 where he outlined the importance of hotel sector’s contribution to climate emissions and the opportunity to be part of solutions and influencing action across the supply chain.
