Women on Islands: Leaders of sustainable tourism

Project aim

Croatia beachThe NGO Small Islands Organisation (SMILO) supports small islands of less than 150km². The Travel Foundation is undertaking training and mentoring for four island partners as part of the SMILO project “Women on islands, leaders of sustainable tourism”, supported by the Anna Lindh Foundation. The aim is to help participants identify, measure and manage the impacts of tourism on their island (or islands) and ultimately to develop a more sustainable tourism model.Women on Islands logo

Working with the islands of Brownsea (UK), Kerkennah (Tunisia), Paros (Greece), and Lastovo (Croatia), our training will support women to be leaders in the field of sustainable tourism. We will be working on improving impacts in six thematic areas: AnnaLindhEU-logowater, energy, waste, biodiversity, and the socio-economic and tourism landscape.

Small islands are particularly vulnerable to issues such as climate change impacts, pollution, biological diversity in need of protection, invasive species, and habitat destruction. Islands share similar challenges with common solutions, but being self-contained also means there is potential for innovation.

Latest and upcoming activities

  • Delivery of online training to introduce the issue of tourism-related impact management, centered around the 5 SMILO themes – water, waste, energy, biodiversity and landscape (in its broadest sense, to include culture etc)
  • An impact management framework and guidelines have been created – for instance, on how to examine the impact of the tourism sector on water consumption, and develop practical strategies to better manage it.
  • These will be followed up with mentoring for participants on each island to help develop an Action Plan with practical solutions
  • Partners will be supported with communications materials to help them share the most valuable lessons learned. This will support SMILO in laying the basis for a final guideline paper on sustainable tourism on small islands.
  • Croatia tourists
