After being on pause for three months during the lockdown, the TUI Care Foundation initiative Keep Our Sand and Sea Plastic Free is getting underway again in Cyprus.
The relaunch was marked by an event in Ayia Napa in late July, in which a wire sculpture of a whale was placed in the town centre, something that will also double-up as a plastic recycling point. The event was hosted by the Municipality of Ayia Napa, and attended by over 80 people, with local food, music, and displays of plastic items found by divers on the sea bed.
As the project restarts, the focus will be on ensuring that the pandemic is not a step backwards in the drive towards plastic-free resorts. There is plenty of research that describes ways of using alternatives safely, disinfecting and reusing items, rather than resorting to single-use plastic.
