Our Flavours from the Fields project with TUI Care Foundation aims to improve the livelihoods of farmers and small-scale producers in the Muğla region of Turkey. A key objective is also to improve the farmers’ knowledge and skills. The project team recently released a Good Agricultural Practices Guidebook (in Turkish) to encourage farmers to adopt sustainable farming practices.
Misuse of pesticides and other agricultural chemicals can have severe effects on the natural environment. Sustainability in agriculture is about caring for the land, resources and maintaining the natural balance.
This guidebook gives information about soil cultivation, fertilisation, irrigation and agrochemicals. It also includes sections about how using herbal pesticides that minimise harm to nature.
Apart from farming techniques, the guide offers suggestions about production planning, better marketing techniques and quality control. There are also sections explaining how producers can add value to their products.
With the help of this publication, we also aimed to raise awareness about the importance of financial literacy. A recent nationwide research finding in Turkey suggests that 56% of farmers are not making any financial calculations at all and 84% of farmers can’t save any money and can’t afford to make any further investments.
Flavours from the Fields’ Good Agricultural Practices Guidebook will be distributed to farmers in the Muğla region with the help of cooperatives and agriculture sector related stakeholders working actively in the project.
