If you read the 2019 report we published with Cornell University and EplerWood International Destinations at Risk: The Invisible Burden of Tourism, you will be aware that many of the world’s most treasured destinations are increasingly at risk of becoming degraded.

As well as identifying the issues that need to be addressed, the report also highlighted a skills gap: new competencies are needed in areas such as data monitoring and impact management, climate action planning and financing, risk profiling and scenario planning, governance and community engagement.

We are therefore pleased to announce the upcoming launch of a new online course for tourism professionals, the Sustainable Management of Tourism Destinations program, which we have developed in collaboration with Cornell University’s Sustainable Tourism Asset Management Program (STAMP) and available through eCornell from Autumn/Fall 2022.

It is a comprehensive 40-hour online course that will equip destination leaders and practitioners with new knowledge and skills to enable a sustainable destination management approach. At least 1,000 participants, from target countries where affordability might otherwise be a barrier to enrolment, will be granted free access to the program through a process which will be supported by the World Tourism Organization of the United Nations (UNWTO).

It is perfect for:

  • National and local government tourism officials
  • Staff at Destination Marketing and Management Organisations (DMOs)
  • Anyone public, private, and non-profit fields related to tourism destination management and stewardship.
