Saint Lucia is a small developing island nation which depends on the tourism industry. We have two current projects underway on the island – Lionfish on the Menu, and International Climate Initiative – and have undertaken scoping for a further programme of work.
Marine conservation
We are working with fishers, wholesalers, hotels and restaurants to create a demand among tourists for lionfish as a local delicacy. This non-native species has invaded Caribbean seas and is decimating populations of local reef fish. It is hoped that by encouraging communities to catch the fish and serve it to tourists, its numbers will be controlled and there will also be economic benefits for local people.
