Climate change & tourism

Take a look below to see the first steps we are taking towards reducing the carbon footprint created by the tourism industry.

Research - Reducing carbon emissions in tourist destinations

We have commissioned research on practical, tourism related carbon reduction activities in destinations; and on the development of a tool to help the industry measure it's carbon footprint. The results of this research will help shape our next steps. We plan to further develop our role in helping companies, via partnerships with leaders in the field and practical demonstrations of how to reduce carbon. we are already partnering the charity The Converging World. Please view our Reduce My Footprint page for more details.

Insider Guide on Climate Change and Tourism

Check out our latest Insider Guide on climate change a

nd tourism. This summarises major concerns and guides on action companies can take.

Offsetting the emissions from our staff travel

Through our demonstration programme in Jamaica we will be offsetting all the emissions creat ed by our staff travel.

Low energy lighting in Jamaica

We are supporting an initial demonstration programme in Jamaica to reduce the carbon footprint of visiting tourists, by installing low energy lighting in the hotels.

10,000 energy saving light bulbs have been installed reducing carbon emissions by 7,012 tonnes!  Equivalent to the carbon produced by 2,800 cars over 7 years (the life of the bulb!)

The debate - "Should we all stop travelling now?"

During our 2006 Anuual Meeting we hosted a debate on global warming.

The DEBATE was moderated by BBC broadcaster Richard Uridge and a panel of expert speakers and forum members were invited to discuss:

"Should we all stop travelling now?"

Some environmental campaigners say we must give up our huge appetite for holidays and breaks abroad - are they right?
What are the true "pros" and "cons" of the issue?

This highly topical and controversial issue was debated by a panel of senior travel industry figures and experts - Dr David Viner of the Climatic Research Institute, Tom Morton of Climate Care, Roger Higman from Friends of the Earth, Danny Bernstein of Monarch Airways, BATA, the UK airlines association and the Sustainable Aviation Working Group, Justin Francis of responsibletravel.com and Stephanie Draper from Forum for the Future .
