Past projects in Turkey
Back to the Sea
In October 2012 we provided Fauna and Flora International and the Mediterranean Conservation Society with grant funding and sustainable tourism expertise in support of a project aimed at helping local fishermen and women earn an additional living from tourism, allowing fish stocks and the marine habitat in the Gökova Bay area to recover.
As the number of tourists visiting Turkey increases, so does the potential number of employment opportunites.
In order to give local people the opportunity to benefit from some of the highest paid jobs in the sector, together with Thomas Cook we sponsored five students to study a tourism degree at Mugla University.
The students graduated in June 2011.
We delivered training in sea turtle conservation to hoteliers and tour operators and also distributed over 1000 Turtles in Trouble dvds to resorts in Turkey and Greece. This project in Turkey followed on from an earlier project that we did in Tobago.
We developed this film in conjunction with the Marine Conservation Society, and it's narrated by the BBC Springwatch presenter Kate Humble.
It explains how UK tour operators can make a positive difference to the conservation of endangered loggerhead and green turtles during the summer holiday season at destinations in Greece, Crete and Turkey.
You can also access a training script to help you deliver the training to your staff & a handout to support the training. These act as a reminder of key actions & also provide important contact information in your area.
