Guaranteed Gambian crafts project
In December 2011, ASSET (Association of Small Scale Enterprises in Tourism), the Travel Foundation and Thomas Cook joined forces with Sandele Eco-Lodge to further develop a project showcasing locally produced Gambian crafts, and the Guaranteed Gambian brand was born.
The Guaranteed Gambian craft project promotes livelihood development of artisans/craft producers in The Gambia by increasing and sustaining their income through the sale of locally produced arts and crafts to both domestic and tourist markets.
Key to this has been product development based on market research and encouraging new and innovative designs.
The project works with a network of talented producers from predominately the Greater Banjul area and Kartong, and since the inception of the project over 50 new products have been developed, promoted and sold through the brand.
The home of Guaranteed Gambian can be found at the ASSET Bantaba on Bertil Harding Highway in Senegambia, Bakau. Products are available to buy through the retail showcase and producers have space to work and provide demonstrations to the centre’s visitors.
In addition, Guaranteed Gambian products can be found in a number of retails outlets including the hotel shop at the Sheraton Hotel (Brufut Heights), Top-Shop stores at the Senegambia and Kombo Beach Hotels, Ngala Lodge (Fjara) and through a small concession at the National Museum in Banjul. At the end of 2013 the Guaranteed Gambian Craft Producers Association was formally registered and recognised by the Gambian Government.
