The Gambia

Gambian lady and tourist in JufurehThe Gambia is very popular with UK holidaymakers. The majority visit for winter sun, bird-watching and excursions, as well as the nightlife around the tourist resorts.

The primary aim of our programme is to develop initiatives which increase income generating opportunities for small suppliers and producers by linking them with the tourism industry.

Like so many in Jufureh village, Lamin Trawally had no choice but to try and earn a living by hassling tourists to buy souvenirs. But now, thanks to a fair ticketing scheme and establishment of a community fund, Lamin is a trained tourist guide. It’s changed his life, and he is now able to support his family thanks to a regular income…which has increased by 80%!
