Turtle Conservation

In Mexico, we're working with TUI UK & Ireland, local specialist NGO Flora, Fauna y Cultura de México A.C (F&F) and Karisma Hotels on a project to help conserve sea turtles.

The beaches of the Riviera Maya are popular turtle nesting beaches, with 7 out of 8 species of sea turtles nesting here. Sea turtles are now an endangered species, with only one out of every thousand newborn turtles surviving to adulthood.

This project aims to help four Karisma Hotels become 'turtle friendly', by applying best practice standards advised by F&F, and by educating customers with 'turtle friendly' tips.

The hotels were audited against F&F's 'turtle friendly' criteria, and each received an action plan, detailing steps for improvement. Throughout the season, their progress has been monitored and in December 2012 the hotels will be given their Turtle Friendly award in either bronze, silver or gold.

To provide ongoing financial support to F&F's Sea Turtle Programme, the hotels involved are offering the opportunity for guests to adopt a turtle.
