Our Programmes
The Foundation initiates projects to explore ideas and demonstrate best practice. Results are then fed in to guidelines and tools for the wider industry to utilise. Some of these tools and guidelines can be found by clicking here.
Using the sub-menu options to the left, you can access information about each of our programmes. Alternatively you can read through the brief outlines below, or download the printer-friendly project summaries.

Brazil
In November 2007 the Travel Foundation began external funding of a new community tours project in Brazil with Estrela.
Cyprus
The Travel Foundation have been working with the UK's leading tour operators to help regenerate mountain villages in decline through the creation of SAVE excursions and a new self-drive village routes booklet.
Dominican Republic
As part of the regional Caribbean programme the Travel Foundation is working with local producers in helping to create agro-tourism links. The Dominican Republic is a growing destination for tourism and offers great potential for agricultural producers once these initial links with tourism are established.
Kenya
The Travel Foundation is funding three external projects in Kenya. One project was set up to ensure that local communities in the Maasai Mara benefit both economically and socially from excursions made to their villages. The other project is the Ujamaa Market Excursion in Mombassa helping to link producer communities on the coast, to local, regional and UK outbound tourism.
Information on the third project will appear here shortly.
Mexico
The Travel Foundation is working closely with local stakeholders to develop a comprehensive plan for the region. This group has initiated a range of activities, including an awareness campaign focusing on the unique features of the cenote system, the importance of effective waste and waste water management and ensuring that there are opportunities for the local people, and particularly the Mayan population, to benefit economically.
Sri Lanka
In Sri Lanka the Travel Foundation has two main areas of focus, using tourism to help communities rebuild livelihoods and generate resources for coastal protection following the devastation of the Tsunami and developing initiatives to support the long-term, sustainable development of tourism on the island.
Thailand
In 2007 the Travel Foundation began funding a new project with the Thailand Community based Tourism Institute (CBT-I). This type of village tourism is managed and operated by local community groups who develop tour programs based around special elements of local life that community members feel proud of and choose to share with guests.
The Gambia
Building on work initiated by the UK government, the Foundation’s programme in the Gambia is focused on increasing income-generating opportunities for small suppliers and producers. Our initial project sought to assist local suppliers, such as unofficial guides, craftsmen and local taxi drivers to sell their products and services and to better engage in the wider tourism industry. From 2006 we have focused on local farmers and work is commenced on a new project to help local beach boys find alternative employment.
Tobago
Together with the government of Trinidad & Tobago, the tourism industry and local conservation groups, The Travel Foundation is developing a programme of activities to make the impact of tourism from the UK as positive as it can be. The programme began with three short-term activities to get our work off to a quick start including staff and customer education on reef and turtle protection. We also funded research to identify longer-term opportunities to improve sustainability in Tobago.
Industry Tools
Our communications and training programmes form a central part of our approach, providing a wide range of tools to inform and educate industry staff, suppliers and customers.
Volunteer Programme
We are helping to build the industry's understanding of sustainable tourism by providing first hand experience on our destination projects.
External Programmes
The Travel Foundation funds external projects in Brazil, Kenya and Thailand and commits itself to the long-term development of projects and the professional support and development of project teams as required. Lessons learned from completed projects will be published for the benefit of the wider industry. To learn more about current projects being funded view the Brazil, Thailand and Kenya pages.
