How to make the most of your policy...
- Communicate the policy clearly to all levels of staff - build in training and refreshers to ensure a good understanding of the policy and their responsibilities. Take time to ensure that staff understand the need for greater sustainability and the benefits this offers to other destinations, customers and the business. Their energy and motivation could make all the difference! Explore has a responsible tourism policy for their UK and overseas operations so that staff can fully understand their commitment to sustainable development.
- Be very clear on responsibility - who has ownership for what? A good example of this can be seen in Tribes Responsible Tourism Policy in their Office Environmental Policy section. Ensure that each section has a clear owner, and that they are reviewed on these actions as part of the formal review process.
- Engage with customers and offer them the chance to give feedback - and make sure you act on realistic suggestions. Dedicate a page on your website to this, and add ‘Email Us’ links so that your clients can easily get in touch.
- Review regularly. Measure your progress and update the policy with results and new targets.
