Child sex tourism is the commercial sexual exploitation of children by men or women who travel from one place to another, usually from a richer country to one that is less developed, to engage in sexual acts with children. The abuse can happen anywhere, not just in brothels and places known for prostitution.
Unfortunately, there is a direct link between tourism and child sexual abuse. By providing the means to travel, and the accommodation, the tourism industry provides anonymity and access to vulnerable children.
The travel and tourism industry can however play an important role in preventing child sex tourism by developing and implementing policies and programmes that support local and international actions.
By including the protection of children as part of corporate responsibility, the travel industry can promote good practice within the UK and across the world.
Ecpat UK and ABTA have developed an online training course which is free for anyone to use. 'Every Child Everywhere' is designed to help travel industry staff protect children, making travel a positive experience for all.
