Run a Project
-
Follow the steps below, or download a copy to save to your desktop.
The following 11 steps will guide you through each stage of running a water and energy saving project.
-
1. Identify the project opportunity- which hotel or hotel group would you like to work with? Or perhaps you’d like to work with a number of hotels in a certain town or region?
-
2. Achieve buy in from the hotels- use the template letter and presentation to encourage hotels to join in.
-
3. Once you have hotels on board, send them the Greener Accommodations pack. Work with them closely at this stage, advising them on which changes are realistic and suitable for their property. Request the packs by emailing admin@thetravelfoundation.org.uk
-
4. Devise a training and support plan to ensure that the hotels involved have everything they need.
-
5. Send them the water and energy spreadsheet to collect the baseline data and details of their current consumption rates, prior to the improvements they plan to make.
-
6. Be on call! Let the hotels know that they can contact you if they have any queries. Remember that we’re here to support you as well!
-
7. Ensure the hotels record a monthly meter reading (same date each month) to illustrate their latest consumption data and send the information to the Environmental Manager at the Travel Foundation. Download a guide to meter reading and data collection
-
8. Continue to measure consumption on a monthly basis for at least six months to ensure that the changes made are having a positive effect. If the effect isn’t as great as expected, revisit the property and look at further possible changes. Repeat the measuring process again! Download our guide to no and low cost, medium cost and high cost measures
-
9. We’ll provide you with the statistics on how much water and energy has been saved. Time do some fantastic PR and try to encourage others to get involved! You can also use our logo in your communications (request a copy by email).
-
10. It’s really up to you how long you run a project for. We recommend the statistics are collected over a minimum of a twelve month period, but the longer the better in order to be able to see the ongoing impact of initial and subsequent improvements. It’s up to you how long you’d like to keep collecting the data and advising the hotels beyond the initial 12 months.
-
11. Once the water and energy saving measures are in place, the hotels should be able to manage their water and energy consumption themselves, and reap the benefits of considerable savings on their bills and a lower environmental impact!
