Office Practice
Encourage staff who can’t find an alternative to driving to work to sign up to the carshare website which matches people with similar journeys so they can travel together.
Staff Travel
As many of your staff will need to travel, both overseas and in the UK, it’s important to develop a staff travel policy to ensure you reduce carbon emissions and your impact on the environment, wherever possible.
Consider carefully how you can reduce the need for travel - with the use of audio / video conferencing and Skype, or combining meetings to reduce the number of trips required.
When all action has been taken to reduce travel, you could consider taking part in a carbon offset scheme to offset the emissions that cannot be reduced. There are a number of schemes around, including ABTA’s ‘Reduce my Footprint’, which offers offset options once all action to reduce carbon has been taken.
As well as business travel, consider how you could encourage staff to travel ‘green’ to and from the office. Think about joining the government’s Green Transport Plan (that helps employees with the tax-free purchase of bicycles) or offer an incentive to anyone who walks, cycles or uses public transport – even something small, such as free tea and toast once a month, can help encourage staff to do their bit!
